PDP NATIONAL CONVENTION UPDATES

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, on Saturday reversed an earlier decision to cancel its national convention on Saturday in Port Harcourt.

The party concluded the exercise, and formally announced the removal of its national officers and the appointment of a caretaker committee.

Former Gov. Babangida Aliyu of Niger State said that the chairman of the party, Modu Sheriff, who was removed Saturday, lacked the powers to cancel the convention.

He confirmed the sacking of Mr. Sheriff and all members of the party’s national working committee as earlier reported by our source.

Mr. Aliyu also moved a motion to cancel the previous zoning arrangement of the party. The motion only upheld the zoning of the presidency to the northern part of the country. The motion was seconded by Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State.

The chairman of the convention, Gov. Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, put the question and members agreed to it.
The party appointed a former governor of Kaduna State, Ahmed Makarfi, as the chairman of the caretaker committee, and named Ben Obi, a former senator, as secretary.

The committee will be in place for three months. The PDP took the decision on Saturday as part of efforts to resolve the crises the party is facing, party officials told us.

The decision was taken at a meeting at Gov. Wike’s office, before it was announced at the convention venue.
A source present at the meeting narrated how other governors and senior party members rejected Mr. Wike’s suggestion that Mr. Sheriff be allowed to head the caretaker committee.

“Governor Fayose said Sheriff should leave for a new caretaker chairman to take over, but Governor Wike said Sheriff should not be disgraced out of office just like that that they should let him be chairman of the caretaker. The governors rejected Mr. Wike’s suggestion,” the source said.

“Sheriff was not happy with the development. In fact, he had to storm out of the venue of the meeting, angrily,” the source said.

The meeting was attended by most of the party’s serving and former governors, senators and federal lawmakers as well as some members of the board of trustees.

Convention: Ex-PDP govs, ministers reject Sheriff’s aircraft

Former Peoples Democratic Party governors and ex-ministers on Friday rejected an aircraft sent to them by the embattled National Chairman of the party, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, to convey them from Abuja to Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

One of our correspondents gathered that the plane was sent to the former governors and other anti-Sheriff with the aim of truncating the parallel national convention they planned for Abuja today.

The aggrieved members, under the name of Concerned PDP Stakeholders, are holding their convention today at Area 11, Abuja, the same day that the Sheriff group is holding its own.

It was learnt that members of the Sheriff group, who had waved aside the former governors as inconsequential, became worried when they got to know the amount of energy and work being put in place to conduct the Abuja convention.

  A serving governor, who was in Port Harcourt for the convention, told one of our correspondent on condition of anonymity, that an aircraft was sent to Abuja on Friday evening to convey the former governors and ministers to  Rivers State.

He said that the aircraft was delayed for more than three hours with none of the former governors and ministers turning up at the airport.

He said, “We have been talking, in fact we told them that we were ready to abandon Sheriff and that they should come to Port Harcourt for final discussion.

“We sent an aircraft to them, hoping that they would board and come here for final discussion. We were ready to share offices with them. But they refused to turn up.”

But a former minister in the Prof. Jerry Gana led group, which is holding its national convention in Abuja, said that the group did not trust the governors.

“We didn’t board their aircraft because we didn’t trust them. They ignored us, they said we didn’t have money to run the party and now they were sending aircraft to us at the last minute. We don’t need it,” he added.

Our correspondent gathered that the governors of the party were troubled and were almost dropping Sheriff, but for the intervention of Governors Nyesom Wike and Ayo Fayose of Rivers and Ekiti states respectfully, who advised their colleagues against taking such decision.

It was gathered that the tenure of Sheriff may be extended at the Port Harcourt convention.

This is as a result of the ruling of a Lagos court, stopping the party from conducting election into the offices of the party’s national chairman, national auditor and national secretary.

Meanwhile, the Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, on Friday insisted that the Port Harcourt convention would hold regardless of any court injunction stopping the exercise.

Wike, who spoke with journalists at the Government House in Port Harcourt, stated that the PDP had filed a motion for a stay of execution of a court order the stopping the convention.

Wike, who is Chairman of the Port Harcourt PDP Convention Planning Committee, addressed journalists in company with Governor Emmanuel Udom of Akwa Ibom State, his counterpart from Abia State, Chief Okezie Ikpeazu, Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State and the Senate Minority Leader, Chief Godswill Akpabio.

He said the PDP’s decision to go ahead with the convention would not amount to disobedience of any court order.

Wike said, “Just to let you know that the PDP convention, as scheduled by National Executive Council, which is the highest decision-making organ of PDP, will be taking place in Port Harcourt tomorrow (Saturday), May 21, 2016.

A FOOL AND HIS MONEY

Amouna and Hauwa, two daughters of
Borno-born billionaire, Alhaji Mohammed Indimi graduated from the University of Lynn, in Florida.

Their joyous billionaire father donated a $14 million (N4.2 billion) complex named after him as "Mohammed Indimi International Business Center" to Lynn University as part of the activities of the University Commencement Day.

This demagogue made his billions in Nigeria from oil wells his military dictator friend dashed him. He is the Chairman, CEO of Oriental Oil and Gas and he is reported as the tenth richest billionaire in Nigeria.

The Borno-born billionaire, Mohammed Indimi has never ever donated a plastic chair to the University of Maiduguri or any university in the Niger Delta talk more of endowing a chair in any Nigerian university. But the irony is that he can afford to endow a chair and donate a $14 million complex to a US University, which by the way does not even need such gesture from him.
Hundreds of internally displaced people in Borno state needs his Robinhood-like assistance from what he has stolen from the people.

Ladies and gentlemen, this is how Nigerian elite underdeveloped Nigeria, with due apologies to Walter Rodney, the author of the book, "How Europe underdeveloped Africa."

The leading contender for the office National Publicity Secretary in tomorrow's national convention of the opposition party, People's Democratic Party, PDP, at Port Harcourt, Lere Olayinka has just been screened few minutes ago alongside other candidates for various positions.

Like Olayinka, candidates screened are Senator Ali Modu Sherif for chairmanship position, Prince Uche Secondus for deputy chairmanship position, and host of others.
While briefing newsmen after being screened by the Emmanuel Aguma-led committee, Olayinka said revitalising the party through its image, will take a center stage in his term.

In his words, the most sorted after and widely endorsed candidate said " Like I have been saying, my job is simply to give new life and energy to the party which is now the only hope of the masses, through positive imaging. We must breathe in new strength to revitalise, and make PDP more formidable than before, because our people does not have another hope than it."

Rescued Chibok Girl: Hunger forced husband to surrender

It has been revealed that hunger forced Mohammed Hayatu, alleged husband
of rescued Chibok schoolgirl Amina Ali, to escape from the Sambisa Forest before he was arrested by the Borno civilian JTF and handed over to soldiers.

Hayatu, one of the Boko Haram commanders also known as “Amir” reportedly escaped with his wife from the Sambisa forest and surrendered to Civilian Joint Task Force members in Balle, a village in Damboa.

This is according to military sources in Damboa, who also accompanied Amina to Maiduguri.

The commander of the outlawed group stated hunger and ill health as reasons for his action as according to him his family would have starved to death
following the blocking of supply routes by intensive military operations.

Ali Gwoza and Apagu Chibok are some of the vigilante members, who identified Amina, when her captor gave himself up.

Amina and her four-month old baby, Safiya, were accompanied by the General Officer Commanding, 7
Division, General Victor Ezugwu to the Borno state Government House to meet Governor Kashim Shettima.

Shettima is expected to proceed with her to Abuja on Thursday where he would hand her over to President
Muhammad Buhari.

Governor Shettima, who interacted with Amina, has declined comments on the latest turn of events.

WIKE FULL INTERVIEW ABOUT THE CONGRESS

Governor Wike is a strong and influential leader within PDP at the State and National level.

While speaking Channels TV this morning, he made the following remarks in his capacity as a PDP governor and the National Convention Planning Committee's Chairman:

1. Nigerians still love the PDP. Nothing wrong with having competing interests in the Party. We are in a democracy.

2. Alhaji Modu Sheriff was not imposed. His emergence was not a rubber stamp. It was not a military decision. The Party endorsed his emergence at various levels. But it is not unusual to have people disagree with the decision.

3. The National Executive Committee of the Party accepted the recommendations of the Zoning committee headed by Gov. Udom although some interested persons disagreed with it and it is not unusual. The complains generated by the re-engineering process of the PDP across the States are being attended to.

4. The action brought against the Party in a Lagos High Court was by impostors and investigations are still on to ascertain their membership of the Party. PDP will get stronger in spite of efforts to break it up.

5. The re-engineering process of the PDP is to unite and position it to be a viable opposition.

6. The re-engineering process of the PDP will accommodate all interest groups in the Party. With what is going on across the State Chapters, interest groups have a remarkable opportunity to key in and build the Party into a formidable opposition Party that will reclaim power in 2019.

7. As Chairman of the Convention Planning Committee, no one has served me any court order stopping the Convention. I'm also aware no one has served the Party Chairman.

8. The reconciliation committee is charged with the duty of reconciling aggrieved members both within the Party and those who left and are desirous of returning. The new PDP
doesn't support impunity. This is the new thinking in the Party.

9. If the former President and BOT Chair who left active politics for statesmanship is desirous of returning, the Party will consider his interest and possibly woo him.

10. The essence of holding Party meetings in different States is to identify with, unite and mobilise our members across the country. We will work to win Edo State.

11. The present INEC is inconsistent and lacks the confidence of Nigerians. INEC which nullified some elections in Rivers State has now set up a committee to review its decision and keeps setting up avoidable crises.

12. Politics is give and take. As a Party we have made internal concessions in fairness to all through a transparent process. Part of the issues was poor communication to the Members of the Party about the real intentions of the Party leadership.

13. The rebuilding process of the Party is to take it away from money bags and throw it back to the people who will have a sense of o ownership of the Party. As at today, there's no single person who will say he is the sole financier of the PDP.

14. PDP is youth-focused and youth-oriented. The present youth leader is a young man from Niger State. We have corrected the errors of the past.

15. The present PDP Governors are committed to stamping out imposition within the Party as a critical part of the re-engineering process of the PDP.

16. There were efforts to amend the Party Constitution at the forthcoming Convention. But they have been suspended based on general consensus.

THANK YOU FOR A SUCCESSFUL CONGRESS

My Dear Party Leaders/ Elders & Members,

In reference to Ward Congress, I sincerely thank you for the peaceful manner in which the last ward congress was conducted. I am proud of you all. Let us not forget that we are in the same family, so there is no winning or losing team; the party belongs to us all. Thank you and God bless.

Breaking: Labour Congress Dares Court, To Embark On Strike Tomorrow

The Nigerian Labour Congress, (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress, (TUC) are set to embark on a strike action tomorrow despite a restraining order by the National Industrial Court, (NIC), sitting at the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja on Tuesday.

According to the resolution of the union at its National Executive Council, NEC meeting held today, the strike action is expected to take effect from 12 midnight today. It would be recalled that the Labour Unions had on Saturday during an emergency meeting, issued a communiqué vowing to embark on a nationwide industrial action should the Federal Government refuse to reverse the sudden hike in the price of fuel.

With this, the Attorney General of the Federation, AGF, and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami SAN, dragged NLC to the Industrial Court, seeking an order of the court restraining the congress from proceeding with the planned strike on the ground that the strike would paralyze the nation’s economy.

Howbeit, in a ruling today, the NIC President, Justice Babatunde Adejumo, restrained the labour unions from going on strike, pending the determination of a suit the Federal Government brought before it. The Presiding Judge, Justice Adejumo further ordered all the parties to maintain status quo until the legal dispute is settled.

However, with the latest development, at the Union’s National Executive Council, NEC meeting held today, the strike action will proceed as planned according to a Source.
“Our decision not to suspend the strike was further fuelled by today’s injunction by the Industrial Court, restraining us from proceeding on the strike expected to begin tomorrow,”
He furthered that the two bodies were still studying development and may not honour the meeting expected with the government at the office of the Secretary.

PDP TO REPEAT CONGRESS IN SEVEN STATES

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said that it will repeat its congresses in seven states where it encountered challenges during the conduct of the exercises.

The Chairman, Ali Modu Sheriff, announced the decision in a communiqué issued at the end of the 71st meeting of PDP National Executives Committee (NEC) held in Abuja on Tuesday.
He listed some of the states affected as Sokoto, Zamfara, Lagos, Yobe and Anambra.

“These congresses will be revisited unless the leaders and people affected look at it and resolve to the satisfaction of everybody, otherwise the congresses will be repeated,’’ Sheriff said.

He said NEC with the Board of Trustees (BoT) resolved that the party would hold its national convention in Port-Harcourt on Saturday as planned.
“We also resolved that at the convention NEC will take a resolution that the party’s presidential candidate will come from the north.

“We also state that the PDP national chairmanship position will go to the southern part of the country after our party’s presidential candidate wins the election,’’ he added.
The NEC also called on the Federal Government and the anti-graft agencies to investigate other political parties’ 2015 general elections campaign funds, he said.

Mr. Sheriff said that the committee observed that only PDP members, no fewer than 20, were being arrested over campaign funding.
“We believe that PDP is not the only party that went for the election; we are also calling on the government and its anti-graft agencies to investigate other political parties’ campaign funds,’’ he said.

Tinubu, Soyinka should tender unreserved apology to Jonathan

THE Concerned Ijaw Transformation Ambassadors (CITA) has said that Bola Tinubu, Prof. Wole Soyinka, Pastor Tunde Bakare, Hon. Patrick Obahiagbon, John Oyegun and the leadership and members of the Save Nigeria Group to tender an unreserved apology to former President Dr. Goodluck Jonathan over the sinister role they played when he announced the removal of fuel subsidy on the 1st of January, 2012.

This was contained in a press statement signed by Amb. Arerebo Salaco Yerinmene Peters. President, CITA and Comrade Obiri Wenebokefe Jonathan, Spokesman, CITA. CITA said that these professed patriots incited and led Nigerians to protest against the removal of subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit.

“They blatantly criticised this policy of Dr. Goodluck Jonathan as a sheer scam targeted at unleashing untold hardship to the average Nigerian and sponsored protests and demonstrations which even led to the death of some Nigerians. . “We are berserkly puzzled that these same persons who feigned patriotism and advocacy for social justice turned a new leaf and now pioneer and celebrate the removal of fuel subsidy under President Muhammadu Buhari".

“Have they become proponents of a new school of thought? Was their disenchantment with the removal of fuel subsidy under Dr. Goodluck Jonathan triggered by sentiments of ethnic and political differences? “Was the Save Nigeria Group a sheep covering veiling a calculated synergy to make Nigeria ungovernable for Dr. Goodluck Jonathan?

“It is crystal clear that the emotions of a great chunk of naïve and gullible Nigerians were incited and their passions ignited to fight against the success of the Nigerian Federal Government under a peace loving and law abiding democratic President tagging it as being anti-people. “On behalf of the foregoing, we direct the Save Nigeria Group and its leaders and members to tender an unreserved apology to Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.”

BREAKING NEWS-COURT RESTRAINS LABOUR FROM GOING ON STRIKE TOMORROW

The National Industrial Court, Abuja presided over by Hon. Justice Babatunde Adeniran Ademjumo, OFR, President of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria in Suit No.NICN/ABJ/179/2016 between Federal Government of Nigeria and the Attorney-General of the Federation versus Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress (T.U.C) this morning granted an Interim Order of Injunction restraining the Defendants/Respondents, their agents, privies, employees, workmen, or servants from embarking on industrial action, demonstrating or engaging in any action that may disrupt the economic activities of the country pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice.

The Federal Government was represented by the Hon. Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN; Chief O. O. Obono-Obla, Special Assistant to the President (Prosecution), Office of the Hon. Attorney General of the Federation and Dayo Apata, Director, Civil Litigation, Federal Ministry of Justice.

The Hon. Attorney General of the Federation submitted that if the reliefs sought in the motion paper is refused, irreparable damage will be occasioned to the country's national economy, security and corporate existence. He further submitted that the Defendants having threatened to shut down the country have to be restrained otherwise there will be a breakdown of law and order.

In his ruling, Hon. Justice Adejumo held that he has jurisdiction to hear the application and that having read through the affidavits in support of the application, he is satisfied that a case of urgency has been established by the Federal Government of Nigeria to warrant the grant of an interim order of injunction.

He said the threats of the Defendants as contained in the communique issued by the Defendants on the 29th May to shut down all banks; airports, seaports, government offices, markets nationwide  has proven that there is a res to be protected.

NIGERIANS SHOULD PREPARE FOR MASS ACTIONS TO RESIST THE WICKED & ANTI-POOR INCREASE FUEL PRICE

- REJECT IMF/WORLD BANK POLICIES OF PRIVATISATION & DEREGULATION!!
SYSTEM CHANGE THROUGH SOCIALISM IS OUR GOAL!!!
Joint Action Front (JAF)
1. The Joint Action Front (JAF), the pro-Labour civil society partner of Labour (NLC & TUC) hereby calls on the Nigerian working people, the oppressed poor, students, traders, professionals, women, unemployed youth, farmers, artisans, Muslims, Christians and faith based organisations to prepare to use MASS ACTIONS to REJECT, RESIST and DEFEAT the latest imposition of hardship, punishment and miserable existence on their lives by the deceptive and anti-poor people Buhari regime with its wicked increase in fuel price from N86.50 to N145 on May 11, 2016.
2. JAF rejects this wicked increase which is a product of the capitalist neoliberal policies of Deregulation. A policy of deregulation, at all times, is meant to punish the working people and the poor, whose lives have been made miserable by recent hike in electricity tariffs, arrears of unpaid salaries, lack of social security and welfare, commercialisation of education and healthcare, poor living conditions, job losses and unemployment, etc. Deregulation, just like privatisation, is dictated by greed, profits and looting of the few rich cabals at the expense of increasing the sufferings of the poor masses and working people.
3. JAF recalls that the in run down to the 2015 general election, when the Buhari-APC appealed to the Nigerian people, with its deceptive change-mantra, we cautioned that: “Irrespective of the party that wins the presidential election, the crisis in the economy is bound to continue because the economic agenda of the two major parties (PDP and APC) remains dependent on oil and capitalist policies of privatisation and deregulation. These policies are operated and championed by servants of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), whose main business is to steal our national wealth for the use of the exploiters in Europe, United States of America, Japan, Asia, etc. These agents cannot defend the working people, the poor and the oppressed anywhere”.
4. Equally, JAF stated then, and we are further resolved that: “the Change we want will UNITE the vast majority of our people under a government that will organise the working people and oppressed poor to boost our productive capacities and will use the resources for sustainable economic and social advancement; thereby reversing our economic dependency and restoring our dignity as an independent country. The Government of the working people will take care of all Nigerians no matter where they come from, their religion, where they live, and their sex. It will care for all Nigerians dehumanised by the rule of the oppressors”.
5. As we engage our labour partners, with effect from the day of the imposition of the wicked increase on harmonising views for a joint programme of resistance to the new fuel price, JAF is resolved to undertake independent course of actions that should ensure, not only reversal of the fuel price from N145 to N86.50; but to struggle to Defeat the capitalist policies of austerity measures targeted at the poor and the working people. In addition, JAF is resolved on a long-drawn struggle with the working people and the poor for political power and to urge Nigerians to raise the alternative banner of Socialism for REAL CHANGE.
6. We urge our affiliates and allies to hold MASS MEETINGS and sensitisation rallies, preparatory to the declaration of our Programme of Action soonest. To this effect, the JAF Oyo State kick-started today a protest march from the University of Ibadan gate through Bodija to mobilise the people in Oyo State for the impending nationwide action.
7. JAF therefore urges Nigerians to REJECT, STRUGGLE & DEMAND the followings:
7.1 Immediate and unconditional reversal of the hike in fuel price from the N145 to the N86.50.
7.2 That Government has a responsibility to make the 4 Refineries to work and build new refineries in order to ensure that availability of petroleum products (petrol, diesel, kerosene, aviation fuel, etc) at cheaper and affordable prices to all.
7.3 Immediate reversal of electricity tariff hike and end to estimated/crazy billing system
7.4 Total Reversal of the capitalist policies of Privatisation and Deregulation, which have been responsible for improper functioning of the local refineries, looting by government officials and fuel marketers through fuel importation and subsidies; and the collapse and fraudulent hand over to private profiteers of public enterprises, such as PHCN, NITEL, Nigeria Airways, Nigerian Ports Authority, Ajaokuta Steel, Osogbo Steel Rolling Mill, Itakpe Iron and Ore, Tafawa Balewa Square, National Arts Theatre, Trade Fair Complex, ALSCON, Nigerian Newsprint Manufacturing Company (NNMC), Daily Times, etc.
7.5 INSIST that Government, should in obedience to Section 16 of the 1999 Constitution on Economic Objectives, respects the provisions that state that:
· Section 16 (1) (b) – “control of the national economy in such manner as to secure the maximum welfare, freedom and happiness of every citizen …”
· Section 16 (1) (c) – manage and operate major sectors of the economy.
· Section 16 (2) – the State shall direct its policy towards ensuring that: [Section 16 (2) (c)] –the economic system is not operated in such manner as to permit the concentration of wealth; or means of production; and exchange in the hands of few individuals or of a group.
7.6 Massive Public investments in industrialization and infrastructure (energy, rail, road, and mass housing) to enhance millions of employment opportunities and wealth creation.
7.7 INSIST that public investments in the energy sector (fuel and electricity) and other public sectors can be efficient if they are under the democratic control and management of committees of workers, consumers and representatives of the government; who would ensure that they are not opened to looting and collapse as was evident in the previous regimes of Obasanjo, Yar’Adua and Jonathan.
7.8 Provision of a National Minimum Living Wage as guaranteed by the 1999 Constitution, adequate funding of public education and healthcare, and respect for collective agreements reached with Labour unions.
7.9 Struggle to END the unjust system of capitalism and its failed policies and to bring forth a new POLITICAL and ECONOMIC ORDER under the JUST SYSTEM of SOCIALISM that will end the era of Privatisation, Deregulation, looting and exploitation by the corrupt capitalist ruling cabals in order to ensure that the wealth of the country is judiciously used to benefit the majority working population (formal and informal sectors) and the oppressed poor.
PREPARE & JOIN OTHERS TO ORGANISE & PREPARE FOR MASS ACTION NOW!
DARE TO STRUGGLE, DARE TO WIN!
DR. DIPO FASHINA Comrade ABIODUN AREMU

PMB WEEPS AS AMECHI GOT EXPOSED

Buhari weeps as UK exposes Amaechi’s loots, probes APC’s campaign funds
A Newspaper in the United Kingdom, UK, ‘The Mail Daily’ , has on Sunday, May 15, published a report revealing how the former Governor of Rivers State and current Transportation Minister, Rotimi Amaechi, looted Nigeria’s treasury.

The report added, that President Muhammadu Buhari’s ‘fantastically corrupt” friend, spent over $140 million on the president’s 2015 campaign and has been accused of stealing £500 million.

“But although, Buhari is seen by some as leading the battle against corruption, but worrying allegations swirl around one of his close allies,” the British Newspaper said.

“Rotimi Amaechi, who traveled with the president to the summit, is Nigeria’s transport minister and is said to have bankrolled Buhari’s presidential campaign.”

Recall, that Amaechi has been indicted by a judicial commission of inquiry in Rivers State for looting the treasury of the state, when he served as Governor for eight years.

However, Amaechi had denied the allegations of corruption and refused to appear before the judicial panel of inquiry to defend himself.

This revelation is coming, following a remark last week by UK Prime Minister, David Cameron, in which he described Nigeria as one of the most corrupt countries in the world, tagging the West African giant as “fantastically corrupt”.

Local media in Nigeria had tagged Amaechi the ATM of Buhari’s presidential campaign and his party the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Amaechi is praised by APC leaders for single-handedly funding the governorship campaigns of at least five APC governors, including that of former speaker, Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State.

“Amaechi remains in his post despite being accused of misappropriating £338 million by a commission investigating the sale of state assets,” the UK Mail observed as it questioned Buhari’s sincerity in fighting corruption.

“Separately, Amaechi is accused of diverting £140 million of state funds into Buhari’s presidential campaign, with reports he paid for media, consultants and private jets.

“The allegations come as the president stands accused of enjoying a lavish lifestyle, while many millions suffer in poverty.

“A leaked draft budget for 2016 showed the Nigerian government earmarked £16 million for the refurbishment and maintenance of the president’s official residence, Aso Rock Guest House, in the capital Abuja.

“There was also a request for £13 million for building a VIP wing at a hospital used by families of the president and his ministerial team,” the paper noted.

DINO MELAYE: PROPOSED FUEL SUBSIDY PROTEST WILL FAIL – OLULADE

The Lawmaker representing Epe Constituency II Hon Segun Olulade has said the proposed mass protest threatened by Senator Dino Melaye against President Muhammadu Buhari over removal of fuel subsidy to pave way for deregulation of the oil sector will fail utterly.

Olulade said Melaye’s threat holds no water and cannot be taken seriously by any right thinking person. He said Dino Melaye is used to such game and lacks morality to take Nigerians to the street in protest except the few political jobbers like him.

The Epe II Lawmaker who praised NUPENG and PENGASSAN for showing understanding and supports for the policy also called the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to dialogue with the government rather than marching innocent workers out for a protest that can earn them no tangible outcome.

Olulade in his statement said he shared the pains of Nigerians and labour force but opined that there is nothing reasonably viable than to deregulate the sector and save Nigerians the incessant and persistent agony of accessing petroleum products which are God given resources to the Nigerian masses.

“Among all the oil exporting countries, Nigeria is the only country that still lives in the euphoria of oil sector regulation and as such, denying the nation of economic benefits accruable from the sector. From availability of the products to job creation and to huge oil sales revenue, the hardship is temporary and I am sure Nigerians will smile in no distant future”, Olulade said.
Olulade then commended Nigerians for accepting the policy in utmost good faith and patience. He said such understanding for the government is inevitable at this period. The outspoken Lawmaker said the patience and cooperation of the masses assures him further that Nigerians are such enduring people who deserve nothing but the best from their government, assuring that the Muhammadu Buhari administration will not let the people down for their endurance, patience and cooperation.

Part of the statement also noted that Nigerians refused to be taken to the streets in protest of the increase in pump price of petroleum products because they trust the present government for its accountability and convinced the decision was in the nation’s best interest.

Olulade who blast Dino Melaye for his statement inciting masses to action against the Federal Government stated that Dino is wading through disgrace with his total political and moral calamities in view. He alleged that Dino’s anti-party stance is not a new thing.

“Dino is a political casino; he wants to gulp so much but emit little in deceit. He is also a political noise-maker who seeks relevance by raising voice over whatever does not go in his favour. He is free to decamp rather than acting up against the government of his party”, Olulade concluded.

NANS TO FEDERAL GOVERNMENT; REVERSE FUEL PRICE HIKE NOW

The National Association of Nigerian Students(NANS) Zone B expressly register total dissatisfaction towards the callous and insensitive hike in price of Premium   Motor Sprit (PMS) from #86 to#145 by President Muhammadu Buhari.
NANS is irked by this ugly development that has no doubt turned the country's economy upside down.
The Minister of State for Petroleum, Mr. Ibe Kachikwu had made public declaration concerning the PMS price hike to 145, stating that it is the best for the nation. But the truth is that Mr. Kachikwu's verbal utterance is a pronouncement of economic malady in disguise, to the nation. President Buhari who claims to be the apex Minister of Petroleum has outrightly jettisoned the tenets of democracy by this singular act of his, haven failed to consult relevant stakeholders. It could be recalled that NANS had advised the President to abdicate his acclaimed position as the Minister of Petroleum, pointing out that it would spell disaster on the nation's economy and here we are as we have been vindicated.
Contrarily to this demand the President have remained obdurate and tactically recalcitrant to our demands. It is conspicuously clear that the Minister of State Petroleum , Mr. Kachikwu is only working in line with the President's directives. And it becomes bizarre to understand why a President who had no knowledge of the downstream sector is being deputized by a more knowledgeable and sophisticated man in the field, coupled with other state engagement of Mr. President.
The hike in price of the PMS has affected students in our various campuses negatively, where they are now forced to pay more for intra and inter campus transportation fare. Those who travel from far and near to campuses , have also been subjected more to this social catastrophe. Price of goods and services have skyrocketed to an unimaginable proportion.
The timing no doubt has also aggravated the effects of the hike. It is  an aberration to increase the price of PMS  when the economy presently hangs on an abysmal economic pendulum of glaring adverse effect.
Nigerian students , under the aegis of NANS Zone B say no to hike in PMS price, hence we demand immediate reversal of the PMS price to #86. Anything short of  this will attract the burning wrath of the Nigerian Students in South South and South East Regional block of Nigeria. This we are not sure the Federal Government would be able to quell when it finally comes up.
Strategic mobilization has began across various campuses for the total showdown, if  our demand is neglected.
The government must learn to respect and consider students welfare before taking certain decisions with far reaching negative effects such as this, as many of our campuses are already closed down as a result of the Federal Government's insensitivity to the Education sector and general students welfare.
If our Demands are not considered and an immediate reversal is not achieved within the shortest possible time, we will alongside Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC) and other civil society organisations, occupy and shut down all federal parastatals and campuses across the eleven States of South South and South East Nigeria.
We  reiterate, that this decision by the President is inhumane, callous, vile and tyrannical in  all respects. It  is a fact that the President neglected the students body when taking the decision, and this also has amassed our grievances  for the Federal Government.
That which happened in 2012 when former President, removed subsidy from PMS would not only happen again, but would be doubled this time around.
Unilaterally fixing PMS price has once again brought to fore the dictatorial attributes of President Buhari, as the PPPRA board, which is the board saddled with fixing PMS price is yet to be reconstituted, therefore whatever price being brandished by Federal Government is null and void and we reject same in its entirety.
We therefore call on the Nigerian people to rise up to their responsibilities as this government has shown time without number that they don't mean well for the masses. This government has continued to swim from one economic blunder to the other, dishing out anti masses policies on daily basis.
This government has been thriving on propaganda and lies, with Minister of State Petroleum stating that Subsidy on PMS has been removed while the Vice President; Prof. Yemi Osinbajo is countering same by saying No Subsidy was removed. Which one do Nigerian masses believe, a government of confusion.
Nigerian Students is saying Enough is Enough.
Reverse PMS Price or Nigeria will remain shutdown.

JOINT COMMUNIQUE ISSUED AT THE END OF THE EMERGENCY MEETINGS OF THE NATIONAL EXECUTIVE COUNCILS OF THE NIGERIA LABOUR CONGRESS, THE TRADE UNION CONGRESS AND CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANIZATIONS HELD ON FRIDAY MAY 13, 2016

The emergency meeting debated extensively the implications of government's unilateral increase in prices of petroleum products, noting government's disinclination for consultation on issues of public interest and its obsession with protecting product marketers at the expense of the Nigerian public. The meeting expressed concern about government's neo-liberal policies which it considered a betrayal of its electioneering promises and observed  as follows:

During the electioneering campaign last year, the Presidential Candidate of the All Progressives Congress ( APC ),  Muhammadu  Buhari, had promised  that, if elected president, he would not remove fuel subsidy if there was any at all;

After his election, President Muhammadu Buhari had maintained that there was no subsidy in the petroleum product price regime and that  even if there was, he did not see how its removal would be beneficial to  the ordinary Nigerian, noting that the slightest product price adjustment often leads to inflationary spiral and unimaginable suffering for the people;

On January 18, 2016, the government further allayed the fears of the Nigerian people by  reducing the pump price of PMS to N86:50, explaining that the reduction was in furtherance of the implementation of the revised component of the Petroleum Products Pricing for PMS and kerosene;

The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr Ibe Kachikwu had been speaking from both sides of his mouth. Whereas last year, he had strongly canvassed for the removal of "subsidy" in defiance of President Buhari, about a month ago, he claimed the subsidy had been removed through his ingenuity and that Nigeria was saving  $1billion from this process;

Organized Labour wondered what has informed government's sudden and dangerous policy summersault and its desperate attempt to convince the public that Labour was part of the decision that led to this price increase;

In view of the fact that the  board of the Petroleum Products Pricing  Regulatory Agency (PPPRA), which is statutorily vested with powers  to recommend prices,  has not been reconstituted, the price variation  announced by any officer of the agency  or outside the agency is  not only ultra vires and illegal, it is a criminal imposition on the citizenry;

The price hike from N86:50 to N145,  representing 67.63% increase, is the height of  insensitivity and impunity as there  was no previous consultation with stake holders, especially the organized labour,  or any justification for this reckless decision other than the fact that government believes it is accountable to no one;

The Minister of State  for Petroleum Resources declared that marketers will have to source their dollars from the secondary  market. The attendant pressure on the dollar will lead to unimaginable rise in prices of commodities and other services thus creating further hardship for the people. Due to the volatility of the black market, organized labour doubts that government would be able to maintain PMS pump price at N145 per litre were the hike acceptable or justifiable. At the time the PMS pump price was fixed at N145, the exchange rate at the black market was N320 to the Naira. Between Wednesday and today when the new pump price was announced,  the Naira has further crashed against the dollar, first to N340 on Thursday,  then N365 on Friday morning and N385 by close of business on Friday, all in 48 hours! At this rate, we believe it will not take long before the Naira becomes entirely useless against the dollar. It is thus morally and economically suicidal to have tied the importation of products to the secondary market exchange rate;

In view of the fact that in the past five years, there has been no increase in salaries or wages or pensions  in the face of devaluations, spiralling inflation and other vagaries of the economy, this product price increase is unrealistic, unaffordable, unacceptable and is thus rejected;

Government is unable to justify this price increase other than the puerile explanation that marketers need to recover their costs, without a thought for the aggregate or  larger national interest including the need for local refining and creation of jobs;

The government has remained incalcitrant  in spite of a subsisting court injunction on the issue of the criminal increase in  electricity tariff even in the face of ever-worsening power supply situation;

From the foregoing, it is evident that the neo-liberal forces in the government have taken over the government and we should expect more inhumane policies which will further degrade the living standard of the average Nigerian. The punitive electricity tariff and PMS product prices may just be teasers;

The implications are costly and far-reaching, with the first and most significant being that we have become dependent on massive importation of refined products  to meet our domestic needs in contra-distinction to other OPEC members. Whereas most OPEC members significantly meet their domestic needs through domestic refining by an average of 80 per cent, Nigeria on the contrary, at the pace it is going, will continue to rely on about 90 percent of imported refined products in the foreseeable future;

And because we are dependent on importation, the end-user  price  will always be influenced or determined by external factors such as the cost of refining abroad, transportation and others denominated in the dollar. As the Naira continues to depreciate against the dollar, so will the woes of consumers in Nigeria continue to increase, a situation the Marketers in classic greed will exploit to their advantage;

Taking into account the utilitarian value of petroleum products in Nigeria, all sectors are going to be negatively affected by this mindless price increase as virtually all the stakeholders are agreed that the most significant contributor to the astronomical cost of doing business in Nigeria is the cost of energy.

NLC, TUC and other civil society allies are not unaware of the positions taken by the Unions in the oil and Gas Industry. A process of engagement will be put in place in order to ensure   the success of the struggle to protect the overall interest of the Nigerian people.

In consideration of all of the above, we urge government to:

Revert to the old price regime in order to reduce the suffering of the people and to consider this singular act of mindless pump price increase as a betrayal of trust;
Revert to the pre-45 percent electricity tariff increase, make meters available to consumers and stop estimated billing;

Reconstitute  the boards of PPPRA and NNPC without further delay and give them their statutory right to function alongside DPR in order to deepen the process of consultation, checks and balances in the downstream sector of the petroleum industry;

Intensify the prosecution of all those involved in subsidy scams with a view to recovery and sanctioning of the culpable;

Put in place enhanced local refining capacity within a specified period  in place of endless importation as an enduring solution to the perennial problem of scarcity;

Reverse the entire deregulation and privatization process which foists on the nation, private individuals as drivers of the economy in contravention of the constitutional provision that says government shall be the driver of the  economy and engage the organised labour in the process of negotiation on key policy issues;

Wean itself from the overbearing influence of the neo-liberal elements in its fold who have not  only staged a coup but are determined to make this government collapse even before  the end of its four-year tenure;

Uphold its electioneering promises to Nigerians   instead of subjecting them to the vagaries of slavish policies such as full devaluation of the naira and total removal of  subsidy as enunciated by the IMF and its agents in the system;

In the event government fails to accede to these demands on or before 12 midnight on Tuesday, May17, 2016, the Nigeria Labour Congress, the Trade Union Congress and their civil society allies resolve to commence the following actions with effect from Wednesday, May 18, 2016;
·         Mobilize to the streets across the country, ordinary and helpless Nigerians to whom they owe the duty of protection;

·         Shut down all Banks, Sea and Airports, Government and private offices as well as Markets.

·         Commence indefinite nationwide strike action.

·         Fight/resist the machinations and cruelties of the neo-liberal forces in the government as part of the process of saving the government from itself and the generality of Nigerians from slavery.

Nigerian are therefore advised to stock sufficient food items that will last for a while for the prosecution of the current struggle against neo-liberal agenda in Nigeria.

For and on behalf of Nigeria Workers, Civil society allies and the Masses;

Comrade Ayuba Wabba, mni.
President, NLC.

Comrade Bobboi Kaigama.
President, TUC.
