Ondo 2016 : AD, APC, PDP, others test strength tomorrow

Who succeeds Dr. Olusegun Mimiko as the governor of Ondo State? This question would be laid to rest tomorrow when voters go to the poll. In this analysis, BUNMI OGUNMODEDE writes on the interests that will determine where the pendulum will swing.

The die is cast. Twenty-eight political parties will tomorrow slug it out in the 18 local government areas of Ondo State to elect Governor Olusegun Mimiko’s successor for the next four years.

Three of the 28 parties – Alliance for Democracy (AD), All Progressives Party (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) – are leading contenders in the governorship election expected to be a tough contest.

Interestingly, the three senatorial districts in the Sunshine State have tickets of the leading parties and the three flag bearers are lawyers. The AD candidate, Olusola Oke is from the South; Rotimi Akedolu (SAN) is from the North and Eyitayo Jegede (SAN) hails from the Central.

Of the trio, only Jegede will be going to the poll tomorrow as a new comer. Oke and Akeredolu are returning candidates. They took shots at the Alagbaka Government House in 2012 as candidates of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and PDP respectively.

Observers say tomorrow’s election would not be an easy win for any of the candidates. According to them, the incumbency factor in the state would be of no consequence to the PDP candidate. The federal might will also be inconsequential to the APC flag bearer, who won in just three out of the 18 council areas in the last governorship election.

Unlike during the 2012 election when the PVCs were not deployed, tomorrow’s poll will be difficult to rig as only voters with the PVCs would be accredited electronically. So, parties who think they could manipulate the system through multiple balloting will be disappointed.

Central Zone

In the Central Senatorial District, the base of incumbent Governor Mimiko and his anointed candidate, Jegede, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has distributed 527, 199 Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) across the five local government areas in the zone. The councils are Akure North, Akure South, Idanre, Ifedore, Ondo East, Ondo West and Ile Oluji/Okeigbo.

The zone which is the largest in the state, has the highest vote and it is Jegede’s political base. Mimiko, who contested on the Labour Party platform in 2012 has his political future tied to tomorrow’s election. The former PDP candidate, Mr. Jimoh Ibrahim accused the incumbent of fighting for a third time on the Jegede ticket. He accused Mimiko of plotting to succeed himself.

But, political analysts said that Mimiko threw his hat into the ring for Jegede to preserve the legacies of his two-term tenure in the state. However, some analysts said the battle would not be a walkover for Jegede since his political godfather is not the one on the ballot.

“He should be ready for battle even in the Central Senatorial Zone. To rely on votes from the district to win the election may be a miscalculation. He should make inroads to the North and South senatorial districts”, one of the analysts said.

Although, Jegede’s running mate, Ola Mafo hails from the South Senatorial District, voters in the district would  prefer Oke.

South District

A total of 404, 330 PVCs have been distributed in the South Senatorial District, Oke’s political base. Being the most experienced of the three leading candidates, he is expected to consolidate his hold in the zone. His choice of Ganny Dauda, from Akoko in the North Senatorial District, as his running mate has been described as an added advantage. Besides, the fact that who is who in Akoko politics have not been supporting the APC candidate following the controversial shadow poll that produced him would help the AD flag bearer in the North. APC chieftains, Senator Ajayi Boroffice, Olusegun Abraham and Mimiko’s former deputy, Alhaji Ali Olanusi were not supportive of Akeredolu’s ambition for the period the electioneering campaigns lasted.

It is believed that supporters of the chieftains would be more comfortable to cast their ballot for the AD in protest of the controversial primary and the attitude of the APC leadership to their grievances.

But, analyst have warned Oke against relying on experience but to take the battle to the PDP in its Central stronghold and take advantage of the discordant tunes in the camp of the APC in Akeredolu’s political base in the North.

North District

The North Senatorial District is Akeredolu’s base. A total of 350, 050 PVCs have been distributed in the sisix local government areas in the zone. The councils are: Akoko North, Akoko Northeast, Akoko Southwest, Owo and Ose. In 2012 when Akeredolu contested on the ACN platform, he won only in Owo and Akoko Southwest, losing the other four local governments to Mimiko’s  Labour Party. The other local government he won was Odigbo. The Ose council which he lost in 2012 has been declared a battleground for the three leading parties. But Ose is believed to be leaning towards the AD. The votes of Owo, being the hometown of the APC flag bearer, will be won by Akeredolu. He would have to do extra work to retain the Akoko Southwest as he was said to have won the council during the last election because of the influence of Senator Boroffice.

Expectations

Observers say that the turnout of voters in tomorrow’ election might be lower than in 2012 because only voters with PVCs would be allowed to participate.

They recalled that only Ondo West and Okitipupa in the Central and South senatorial zones recorded 50 per cent PVCs’ distribution. Going by the distribution, of the 181 registered voters in Akure South, only 74,337 have collected the PVCs; in Akure North, 21,447 out of the 47, 031 registered voters have collected PVCs; 55,174 collected in Ondo West’s 111,857 registered voters; 15, 087 collected PVC’s out of the 32, 074 registered voters in Ondo East and 41,487 out of the 79,466 registered voters in Okitipupa have collected the PVCs.

ONDO 2016: BEWARE OF PROF. kAYODE SOREMEKUN SAYS LERE OLAYINKA

The Ekiti state Governor's Special Assistant on communication and New media has called on the Ondo people to be mindful of Prof. Kayode Soremekun who is the INEC returning officer for the Saturday 26th of November, 2016, gubernatorial election.

He said Prof Kayode Soremekun, VC of Federal University, Oye Ekiti (FUOYE) was at the center of the rigging of Edo State election.

He also said about 30 Level 8 Officers in FUOYE were taken to Edo State to act as INEC Officers. They claimed to be PhD holders and FAKE ID CARDS were done for them. Those Level 8 Officers that impersonated as LECTURERS conspired with Prof Kayode Soremekun to rig Edo State election.

He also said to our source that Dr Kayode Fayemi has again recruited Prof Soremekun with whom he ran RADIO KUDIRAT as the arrowhead of Ondo State rigging plan.

Ondo State people, Prof Soremekun is a FRAUD. He used fake Profs and PhD holders with fake ID CARD to rig Edo State election, he wants to repeat the same in Ondo State, RESIST HIM by whatever means.

PRESS RELEASE: SHUN EVERY FORM OF ELECTORAL VIOLENCE, VOTE AND PROTECT YOUR VOTES, WAILING WAILERS TO ONDO ELECTORATES

We call on the good people of Ondo State to shun all acts of electoral violence in the forthcoming election on Saturday, the 26th of November, 2016. This will enable them to choose a new leader that will oversee the affairs of the state on trust.

Through the history of Ondo State, the sunshine state and a great Nigerian state, the people have always elected  vision driven and purposeful leaders. We encourage them to come out en mass and cast their votes for the candidate of their choice and doing so, they must eschew every form of electoral violence.

We also encourage the good people of Ondo State to also protect their votes ensuring that it counts.

The good people of Ondo State should take note that Democracy is for the benefit of those who pay their dues by acting right and by staying alive. The youths and partisan politicians should not allow themselves to be used as political thugs or rigging tools.

It is our collective duty to ensure that Democracy continues to thrive in Ondo State and Nigeria at large.

We call on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Nigerian Police Force, the Army, the Local and International election observers and other security apparatus deployed to Ondo State, for the peaceful conduct of the election, to guide and ensure a free and fair election.

All the officials deployed to oversee the smooth conduct of the election should conduct themselves in a more professional manner which should exclude partiality, aiding and abetting rigging, partisanship or taking sides to the advantage of any candidate or political party. It should be noted right now, that the eye of the world is watching to see how the Ondo State Guber election will be conducted.

It is our belief that if INEC and those saddled with the duty to conduct the election play their professional roles fairly, without fear or favour, the senseless incidents of electoral violence, protests or unnecessary post election petitions to the election tribunals will be averted.

We urge the people of Ondo State to remain calm throughout the period of the election and after the election, and hope that majority of them will vote to choose the candidate who will carry out the affairs of the state in such a way that the state Government will  work for the good and well-being of the people of the state, all and sundry, to wit: that the man on the street and women and children will benefit and enjoy the dividends of democracy.

How Jegede's Victory at the Court of Appeal quickly de-popularised other Candidates. - AdelajaAdeoye

The Saturday November 26th election in Ondo State is one of the most intriguing election in 2016 in Nigeria because of the peculiarity and numerous challenges faced by virtually all the gladiators involved in the election.

Let us examine the issues one by one, the raging storm first started in the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) where factions loyal to Former Lagos Boss, Senator Tinubu was played out of the ticket, this act almost tore the party apart, because the growing anxiety in the party seems to know no end.

Some of the loyalist later decamped to Alliance for Democracy (AD), the platform in which Mr. Olushola Oke rumored to be Tinubu's candidate will run as governorship candidate. On the other hand, the main faction of APC who has the bulk of the controlling powers were able to win the ticket for Mr Rotimi Akeredolu.

Mr Akeredolu, is like a child who has been pampered and provided with everything needed in life while other kids have to fend for themselves, Mr. Akeredolu just like BUHARI, ran away from public debate which could have provided the Ondo people the great opportunity to know him better.

However, Mr Akeredolu maybe banking on the assurances of the ruling APC, that all machineries will be handed to him for easy win at the poll, this may have necessitated why he shunned the debate and other public engagement.

For the main Opposition party PDP, it is unclear if the allegation that Former Borno State Governor, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff and his factional candidate of PDP were actually working for the ruling APC to scuttle the chances of the party at the Ondo Guber race, allegations were flying up and down to the extent that the court case has dragged beyond what one can actually explain.

There are two factions in the opposition party PDP, one is led by the Former Kaduna State Governor, Senator Ahmed Makarfi while the other led by Senator Sheriff.

Senator Sheriff held his Congress in Oyo State, and Mr. Jimoh Ibrahim emerged but Makarfi faction had there own in Ondo as stipulated by the party's constitution, it was duly monitored by officials of INEC as required by electoral law which produced Mr. Eyitayo Jegede.

It was like a lost hope for the Makarfi faction when the case was being adjourned every time by the court and the election is very near but not final verdict in sight to there favor.

Other candidates were busy campaigning and making heavy political statements as it was sure for them to contest unlike the Jegede's faction embroiled with court cases.

Akeredolu of APC, Oke of AD and Jimoh Ibrahim of one of the two factions of PDP who got favorable court injunction via Justice Abang of Federal High Court in Abuja were all visible everywhere campaigning and trying to woe electorates, the Ondo people were left with no choice than to choose amongst them, they were all contending on popularity.

Based on feelers, Olushola Oke and Akeredolu were swooping in massive popularity until the court of Appeal ruled on the 23rd of November 2016 that Sheriff's faction of the PDP was constituted by fraud, nocking off his Candidate by barring Jimoh Ibrahim from parading himself as the candidate of PDP.

It was like a wild fire, the atmosphere in Ondo was agog with massive jubilation and singing of Eyitayo's praises. Ondolites troupe out in great numbers to celebrate, one can visibly notice the sharp decline in the popularity of other candidates who had been  swimming in massive attention of the Ondo people.

The Social Media went frenzy with numerous post via Favebook, Twitter and Whatsapp congratulating Eyitayo, people in Ondo were believed to be very angry with the whole process which almost prevented Mr. Eyitayo from standing in the election.

As it stands, it is looking like even the few days remaining to election may not have any negative impact on the victory of Eyitayo as the next Ondo State Governor because he is been projected to win the poll in a land slide owing to his great personality and unstoppable popularity. Although there are calls here and there for INEC to postpone the election which has not been granted as at the time of this article.

Fayose tasks NJC on Justice Abang, calls for his sack, Say; “He’s a disgrace to the judiciary”

Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose has described the controversial Federal High Court, Abuja judge, Okon Abang as a disgrace to the judiciary, calling on the National Judicial Council (NJC) to “save the judiciary from this disgrace called Okon Abang  by showing him the way out of the bench.”

Governor Fayose, in his reaction to the Appeal Court judgment, which nullified Abang’s ruling of the October 14, 2016 and declared it as a fraud, said; “it is obvious that Justice Abang is representing the dirty interests of some cabals, who are protecting him despite the incalculable damages he has done to the judiciary.”

In a statement issued on Wednesday and signed by the governor’s Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, he said; “In the face of these indictments by the appellate court, NJC must wade in and save the judiciary from Abang.

He said a judge who gives fraudulent judgments is even more dangerous than armed robbers, adding that; “Those running after judges for alleged corruption and excluding a judge like Abang may not be far from being the beneficiaries of his (Abang) fraudulent judgments.”

The governor said “a judge like Abang is a cankerworm that can destroy the country if not removed totally before he does further damage to the polity.”

Governor Fayose said; “Today again, three justices of the appeal court descended on Justice Abang, describing his judgments imposing Jimoh Ibrahim as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Ondo State and the one affirming Senator Ali Modu Sheriff and the PDP National Chairman as fraudulent.

“It should be recalled that in June, a five-member panel of the court of appeal led by Justice Morenike Ogunwumiju said Abang “raped democracy” when he annulled the election Abia State Governor, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu and ordered INEC to issue a certificate of return to Mr. Samson Ogah without evidence of forgery against Dr. Ikpeazu. The court went on to say that Abang embarked on a wild goose chase and that he spoke from both sides of his mouth.

“These are clear indictments on Justice Abang and in a civilised society; he ought to have resigned without the prompting of anyone. Or how can a judge that has been adjudged severally as giving fraudulent judgments and acting like Father Christmas still sit in judgment over cases involving Nigerians?

“The judiciary, being the last hope of the common man must therefore be purged of elements like Abang and NJC must do the needful by sacking him forthwith so that the bench can have a new lease of life.”

BREAKING: Obasanjo attacks President Buhari, NASS

The honeymoon between President Muhammadu Buhari and former President Olusegun Obasanjo seems to have ended. He also said it is tiring to hear the complaints of the Buhari
administration when it was voted in to
change the mistakes of the past governments.

For the one and a half year that president Buhari has been in power, Mr. Obasanjo remained one of his staunchest backers, visiting him repeatedly and publicly defending most of his actions. But speaking in Lagos Wednesday, Mr. Obasanjo served signal that the era of being soft on the administration President Buhari leads is over.

Delivering the keynote at the First Akintola Williams Annual Lecture, Mr. Obasanjo lashed at the Buhari administration for repeatedly lumping the country’s three previous administrations (including the one he, Obasanjo led) together and then accusing them of misgovernance.

He also advised Mr. Buhari to stop dwelling on the past, saying since he was elected to change the country, he should concentrate on clearing the mess he inherited. “Now that we have had change because the actors and the situation needed to be changed, let us move forward to have progress through a comprehensive economic policy and programme that is intellectually, strategically and philosophically based,” Mr. Obasanjo said.

“It is easier to win an election than to right the wrongs of a badly fouled situation. When you are outside, what you see and know are nothing compared with the reality. “And yet once you are on seat, you have to clear the mess and put the nation on the path of rectitude, development and progress leaving no group or section out of your plan, programme and policy and efforts. The longer it takes, the more intractable the problem may become.”

The former president also criticised plans by Mr. Buhari to take about $30billion loan. “I am sure that such a comprehensive policy and programme (that will move Nigeria forward) will not support borrowing US$30 billion in less than three years. It will give us the short-, medium- and long-term picture.

“Adhocry is not the answer but cold, hard headed planning that evinces confidence and trust is the answer. Economy neither obeys orders nor does it work according to wishes. It must be worked upon with all factors considered and most stakeholders involved.

“The investors, domestic and foreign, are no fools and they know what is going on with the management of the economy including the foreign exchange and they are not amused. The Central Bank must be restored to its independence and integrity. We must be careful and watchful of the danger of shortermism.
“Short-term may be the enemy of medium- and long-term. We must also make allowance for the lessons that most of us in democratic dispensation have learned and which the present administration seems to be just learning.”

The former president did not spare the National Assembly which he said is a cesspool of corruption that stinks to the high heavens. This is not the first time he has come after the federal lawmakers of the 8th assembly who also do not have any love lost for him.

Tinubu As A Leader Is Responsible For His Own Misfortunes - Fayemi

Sequel to the ongoing intraparty crisis segregating the leadership of the All Progressive Congress (APC), another known "political son" to Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, who had chosen to pitch his tent with President Muhammadu  Buhari and the National Chairman of the party, Chief John Oyegun, Dr Kayode Fayemi has thrown a stone at his former political godfather, Tinubu over the weekend.

The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, who Saturday described the embattled national leader of the party as a leader and hardworking person, however maintained that Tinubu was responsible for his own misfortunes in the party, saying no one can be seeing himself as the indispensable where thousand of intellectuals operate.

According to the former Ekiti State governor, "Asiwaju might have been instrumental to the political breakthrough of some of us, he has the financial muscle, but we equally paid our dues without opportunity of negotiation. We have always been the "Yes Sir" types and we never complained. But we never expected him to think such can continue where development takes place. It is no news that whatever goes around comes around."

Fayemi urged the supporters of the President Buhari-led administration to remain steadfast and focused. He added that the present economic situation of the country was a result of some injurious pieces of advice given the presidency at the inception of this administration by some people he described as leaders without visions who had wanted to hijack the presidency before God's intervention.

He assured Nigerians that everything shall soon take formation and the country shall regain her strength again as the giant of Africa, adding that Asiwaju Bola Tinubu should not continue tearing the party and the country apart with his "golden silence" which he (Fayemi) said was destructive and well understood.

"Asiwaju's antics are not new to us. We can never underrate his political calculations and permutations. Yet, we cannot continue worshiping him. He deserves respect that we are giving but should stop making this country and our party ungovernable for our leaders. The steering is always meant for the driver and not in conjunction with the conductor.

"Once a political party is formed and a national leader is appointed or elected, other mini-leaders should be humble enough to respect the decisions of the constituted authority no matter what. Wherever there is no orderliness, there can never be progress, and we call ourselves the Progressives. We must be ready to live out our name as the Progressives.

"What happened in Ondo State during our primary that produced Chief Rotimi Akeredolu against the wishful calculation and permutation of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu to impose Hon. Segun Abraham was a complete display of egocentric orientation by Asiwaju. No single man, I repeat, no single individual can override the decision of our political party. No more in APC!

"We have presented Akeredolu and we believe he is winning the governorship election by all means. Ondo people have supported our candidate and with the reactions of the people, he has the victory already. Our second coming to this state will be to inaugurate Chief Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN) as the Governor of Ondo State, political anti-party and calculations of some disgruntled elements notwithstanding, because everything, I mean every arrangement is in order," Kayode Fayemi assured APC supporters.

The present economic situation of the country was a result of some injurious pieces of advice given the presidency at the inception of this administration by some people he described as leaders without visions who had wanted to hijack the presidency before God's intervention.

INEC releases new official statement on Ondo governorship election holding on Saturday

Barely minutes after the Appeal Court in Abuja ruled that INEC should remove the name of Mr. Jimoh Ibrahim as the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the Saturday governorship election in Ondo State, the electoral body has released an official statement.

INEC, through the Chief Press Secretary to the Chairman of the commission, Mr. Rotimi Oyekanmi, said that it will obey the judgement of the Court Appeal.

The commission said it would now replace Mr Jimoh Ibrahim’s name with that of Mr. Eyitayo Jegede (SAN) as ordered by the appeal court.

However, the electoral body said that the order of the court should be served on it before Friday.

It said it was when such judgment is served on it that it will immediately comply with it.

Oyekanmi nevertheless said that the commission was not planning to shift the date of the election.

“Yes, the judgment as we followed it shows that we must replace the name of Ibrahim with that of Jegede.

“We will obey the judgment because this is an order coming from a superior court. We will abide by that decision.

“However, we will expect that the judgment be served on us before Friday to enable us comply. When we are served, we will comply immediately.

“But we are not going to shift the date of the election. We have passed that stage.

The election is going to hold on Saturday, November 24 as scheduled,”

Buhari’s show shame against Justice Ngwuta

“Twenty-seven million naira in cash was found at the residence of Justice Sylvester Ngwuta, justice of the Supreme Court, but it “completely disappeared. The money was in the bathroom of the Ebonyi residence of Justice Ngwuta, but it was later removed on the orders of the judge.”

Hear FG again:  “The first instruction Justice Ngwuta gave to a witness was; ‘go and get rid of all those cars’, and the second instruction was; ‘go to my bathroom you will find two bags.’

- Charles Adeogun Philips, counsel to FG told Federal High Court on Monday

MY TAKE:
All of you APC/SaiBuharists that have believed the lies of these Buhari’s DSS and EFCC, can you see your lives outside?

N27m cash found in an accused house after you have counted the money abi (you can’t know the amount without counting)? Na spiritual money una see?

And the DSS were there when Justice Ngwuta was giving instruction that “they should get rid of cars” abi? How does anyone get rid of cars ooo? Were the cars bombed and destroyed such that they can no longer be traced? Or were they taken away by magic powers?

The one wey mumu pass:
They claimed Justice Ngwuta gave instruction to someone to go to his bathroom and that he will find two bags. So, who did the counting of the money inside the bags? Armed men of the DSS counted the money and then allowed it to disappear?

These people are nothing but CLOWNS… Only fools like them will believe whatever they say.
